Melting Pot or Ethnic Stew? Recipe for the Future of the United States

The term “melting pot” suggests a hybrid society formed by influences of immigrant cultures. The notion comes from the pot in which metals are melted at great heat, melding together into new compound, with great strength and other combined advantages. In contrast, the concept of “ethnic stew” refers to a society where cultural differences are maintained, celebrated and protected. Which term best describes the United States as the beginning of the 21st century?  Which concept should be pursued? Are the two mutually exclusive? What are the appropriate elements of assimilation? What other issues are involved?
