Africa: Challenges of the 21st Century

Africa is a continent of both powerful traditions and great, ongoing transformations. This panel will explore both historical legacies that have shaped modern political Africa and the major transformations currently taking place on the continent. Sub-Saharan Africa faces challenges on many levels at the beginning of this century. The region continues to lag behind other regions of the developing world in many economic and social indicators, such as the HIV-AIDS pandemic, and political instability continue to take its toll in human suffering.  What responses are appropriate and realistic in the face of these challenges?
