In April 2005, President George W. Bush proclaimed that “my view of China is that it’s a great nation that’s growing like mad.” According to some projections, the country will surpass the United States as the world’s largest economy within 20 years. As China rises, will it become a more responsible “stake holder” in the international community as its cooperation with the U.S. on the North Korean nuclear issue suggests? Or, will it seek to achieve hegemony in East Asia or otherwise become a “revisionist” power? This panel will examine the future trajectory of China’s rise and possible implications for peace and stability in the global community.
