If the globalization of business, technology and communication is to benefit all people and lead to peace rather than conflict, we must recognize that it must be based on tolerance, appreciation and understanding between the West and Islam. Teachers, professors and mullahs must insist that educated persons in different cultures understand one another after they know themselves, rise above "irreconcilable" political and religious differences, replace conversion of others with knowledge of them while refusing to disguise relativism as tolerance. This must be based on what all human beings have in common, beginning with the capacity to reason, and it necessitates a required international curriculum in public affairs and an attendant international conversation.
