The Paradox of Globalization: Rising Global Interdependence and Rising Global Conflict

As the 20th century closed, many scholars predicted that the world had reached the “end of history” and that the increasing interdependence would inevitably cause a decline in nationalism and war and give rise to world prosperity, understanding and peace. Events in the first decade of the 21st century call these assumptions into question. This panel will discuss globalization and the challenges it presents to the peoples of the world in areas such as trade and security. More importantly, the panel will discuss how the peoples of the world can live together in peace and how the differences among cultures and peoples need not be a threat to world peace if met with understanding, education and tolerance.
