Richard Berke

Richard L. Berke is the assistant managing editor for The New York Times, a position he has held since 2006. Prior to this, Berke served as The Times’ associate managing editor for news and as the Washington editor, where he was responsible for overseeing the daily work of 40 reporters, as well as coordinating political campaign coverage.

In addition, Berke’s experience includes working as a national political correspondent for a decade. He covered the 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000 presidential campaigns, and his beats at the Washington bureau of The Times included Congress, the White House, money and politics.

Before joining The Times, Berke was with the Baltimore Evening Sun, where he eventually became chief Washington correspondent after covering Congress, the White House and government agencies.

Berke received a first place award for enterprise reporting from the Maryland Society of Professional Journalists and was appointed to the Senior Advisory Board of the Kennedy School of Government Institute of Politics, Harvard University. He has served as a fellow at the Institute of Politics and a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Berke makes frequent television and radio appearances on such programs as the Today Show, Face the Nation, Nightline, Charlie Rose, Good Morning America, The News with Brian Williams, Washington Week in Review, CNN’s Inside Politics and Reliable Sources, and the Diane Rehm Show.

Berke received his B.A. degree in political science from the University of Michigan and an M.S. degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
