Clay Johnson is an award winning documentary producer for WRAL-TV, a CBS affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina, which holds a reputation as one of the best and most innovative television stations in the country.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of South Carolina, Johnson worked as a radio news director and then as a television news reporter at network affiliated stations in the Carolinas. In his very first television job, Johnson was named South Carolina Reporter of the Year by the Radio Television News Directors Association.
In 1994 Johnson was appointed Deputy Press Secretary for the Governor of North Carolina. In 1996 he formed Clay Johnson Productions, Inc. and worked as an independent producer of documentaries, travel programs, news segments medical reports and educational videos for a variety of regional and national clients.
In 2000, he produced a documentary on teaching called “No Greater Calling” which aired on PBS stations in major markets across the country, including the network’s flagship station WGBH-TV in Boston. In Spring 2004, Capitol Broadcasting Company and WRAL-TV hired Johnson to establish a documentary production unit. Johnson developes and produces the station’s “Focal Point” documentary series, which examines important issues affecting North Carolina.
Johnson has received numerous awards and honors including the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. He’s also received numerous Emmy nominations and awards from the Associated Press, Radio Television News Directors Association and Society for Professional Journalists.
