2009 PUBLIC AFFAIRS CONFERENCE
Our nation’s future relies on a well-educated public to be wise stewards of the environment that sustains us, our families and communities, and future generations. However, the No Child Left Behind Act’s (NCLB) impact on our public schools has resulted in teachers sacrificing environmental education to spend more time on subjects that are tested on the high stakes tests in reading and math. Therefore, NCLB contributes to an environmental literacy gap by reducing environmental education taking place in K-12 classrooms. Will current legislation (HR3036 and S. 1981) result in changes in curricula that address issues of environmental sustainability?
