The highest-grossing animated film Inside Out 2 added the emotions anxiety, ennui, envy, embarrassment, and nostalgia to the emotions of joy, sadness, disgust, and anger. Emotions are complicated and can shape our perspective and our actions in the world, especially when the U.S. Surgeon General issued an Advisory declaring loneliness and isolation as a profound threat to our health and wellbeing. What Happened to You? by Dr. Bruce Perry & Oprah Winfrey offers, “We often use our belief in another person’s ‘resilience’ as an emotional shield. We protect ourselves from the discomfort…It’s a kind of looking away; it lets our worldview go unchallenged and lets our life continue with minimal disruption.” It’s uncomfortable to witness, cause, and/or feel the implications of harm; yet, we need to acknowledge the impact we have on others and our planet. What is the consequence of not recognizing loneliness and isolation as a public health threat?  Why is acknowledging the impact of harm so difficult and what barriers prevent us from doing so? How can individuals and communities take steps to mitigate the negative effects of isolation and harm?  How do we balance our emotions vs our actions in the world? How can we be whole, achieving, resilient humans who heal the planet?
