The loneliness culture

3:30 - 4:45 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2015
PSU Ballroom East

Today, many people feel like they are alone, even if surrounded by social communities. Some even believe that Americans have taken such a self-serving approach to life that they have chosen not to care for the well-being of neighbors. Through social media, we are more connected than ever, yet many report a growing sense of isolation. Perhaps in relation, the rate of successful marriages continues to decrease while addiction to online intimacy, in the form of pornography, increases. How do we begin the conversation that empowers individuals to avoid sinking into a “culture of loneliness” and to reclaim personal intimacy, human community and healthy human-to-human connections?
