The pyramid of military honor: Is it crumbling in the eyes of America?
Allen Boyd observes, “America's fighting men and women sacrifice much to ensure that our great nation stays free. We owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers…who are blessed enough to return from the battlefield unscathed.” In contrast, veterans are often met with re-integration difficulties, trouble obtaining promised benefits and sub-par medical/psychological care. Do these difficulties illuminate a disintegration of social reverence for veterans? Is it a result of systemic and political dysfunction? In relation, how do we begin to address veterans' issues in an effective manner that goes beyond treating the “visible symptoms” and moves toward a “permanent cure”?
