What is the role of business in addressing poverty?
According to the US Census Bureau, 45 million Americans, or 15 percent of the population, live below the poverty line. The 100 largest CEO retirement packages are worth a combined $4.9 billion, equal to the entire retirement savings of 41% of American families. These numbers are even worse when the income and health disparities of African Americans and Hispanics are included. In the face of these disparities, what are appropriate responses from the corporate world? To what extent do win-win strategies, that benefit both business and the needy, exist?
