Agriculture, food policy and domestic tranquility

Federal agriculture policy helps foster high levels of productivity, which in turn helps keep American food prices relatively low. Roughly two-thirds of the nearly $150 billion annual agriculture appropriations are for mandatory funding for food and nutrition programs such as “WIC” and “SNAP” (formerly known as food stamps). Low food prices and helping individuals and families in need are about more than food.  However, they are important agents of domestic peace and security. Given this, what are the best policies regarding food production, safety, nutrition, access, and consumption?
