Substance abuse is identified as a major health concern across the nation.  Rural youth, in particular, are at greater risk than their urban counterparts to abusing alcohol, prescription drugs and illicit drugs like methamphetamines, inhalants and heroin. Rural areas lack the basic substance abuse treatment services and detox services necessary for positive outcomes. Understanding the problems requires a systems view of environmental factors which contribute to the problem. What are viable strategies to reduce substance abuse, through prevention, education, enforcement of drug laws and access to care in both urban and rural settings?
