Health insurance equity and the current debate
Most Americans believe that access to basic health care is a fundamental right of every citizen, yet health insurance coverage is a problem that remains. How do we make a commitment to this national policy aim by having all citizens eligible for insurance, while maintaining low premiums? How have the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion funds, or lack thereof, affected the health insurance marketplace? What new ideas are being explored on how to reach equity in health insurance, through a “public option” approach, which offers a Medicare-like plan or a single payer system for everyone?
