All things to all people: The expanding role of public education
Since the days of the one-room school, public school curricula have expanded to include include vocational training, sex education, the use of technology and much more. Perhaps the greatest changes have been outside of the classroom. Schools now provide meals and clothing banks. Districts employ social workers, psychologists, child care providers and security officers to meet their students’ needs. What are the implications of these expanded roles in terms of resources and the mission of public education? What policies are needed to sustain schools’ efforts to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of America’s children?
