Current schisms between public education and communities across America are creating complex challenges for educators attempting to engage within their communities actively and authentically. How can educators move beyond traditional theory and pedagogical practice to mobilize the ingenuity of our youth to meet social challenges and invoke more active citizenship? How can educators extend community-connected challenges into active learning opportunities and be able to investigate new knowledge centers and connect youth to the larger dynamics and issues of their time such as social equality, mental health, climate change, and the impacts of social media? In what ways can collaborations between education, parents, local governments, businesses, and other community partners help ensure meaningful educational experiences for K-16 students?
