Science in Partnership: Bridging Human and Machine Capabilities
Linking human and machine capabilities means working toward a partnership where technology supports and strengthens what people can do, instead of replacing them. When used well, this teamwork can help accelerate the process of information, expand the impact of projects, and bridge the gap between experts and citizens through transparency and community partnership. This can lead to more effective monitoring, informed decisionmaking, problem-solving and policy creation, especially concerning AI in the Physical and Applied Sciences. Humans and machines each bring different strengths to this partnership. How are these strengths best leveraged to maximize the machine’s precision, speed and data analysis without losing the ability for individual critical thinking, ethical judgement and recognition of potential biases? To address these challenges, how must AI be regulated for access, safety, fairness, privacy and accountability? What are potential economic, workforce and societal implications that effect both the scientific fields and the communities they serve?
