Debbie Dougherty is professor of communication at University of Missouri and the associate dean of research for the College of Arts and Science. Her research specializes in organizational communication and explores the relationship between power and organizing, particularly as related to gender, emotions and social class.
Dougherty has begun a systematic exploration of the relationship between organizational communication and social class. Her book titled The Reluctant Farmer: Exploring Work, Social Class, and the Production of Food provides theoretical and practical terrain for understanding how we produce and reproduce social class in Western society. She has received numerous awards for her research and community projects including the Management Communication Quarterly Article of the Year Award, the Norman K. Denzin Qualitative Research Award, and the Excellence in Education Award. In addition, she and her husband own a small farm in Missouri and produce most of their own food.
