Gowri Parameswaran

Chair and Professor of Educational Studies

Gowri Parameswaran is professor and chair of educational studies at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Her research focuses on gender, socioeconomic status and culture and their impact on children and adult cognition in both the US and in India. 

Parameswaran is the co-editor of the introductory text for Women Studies, Women: Images and Reality, published by McGraw-Hill. In recent years, she has written on topics such as the privileging of the Global North and the barriers imposed by the new Head-start mandates on children and teachers in migrant communities. She is currently exploring the exploitative consequences of the history of research on parenting in psychology in the age of structural adjustment and reduced government services for families in poverty. She obtained her master’s and doctorate degrees in cognitive/educational psychology from Rutgers University.
