The haves and the have nots: Inequalities in America's public schools

1:30 - 2:45 p.m., Thursday, April 7, 2016
PSU 313

Jonathan Kozol uses the term “savage inequalities” to describe the effects of extreme wealth and poverty as they play out in the inequities among our nation’s public schools. Inequities appear in all aspects of low-income schools when compared with their affluent counterparts: quality of facilities and materials, teacher competence, salary levels, parent involvement, community support and student achievement, to name a few. How and why have these sad differences not been adequately addressed? Who is responsible for addressing these issues in public schools? How will real, substantive change occur?
