Food insecurity, that is, being undernourished, occurs in countries where food is scarce and in countries where food is abundant. An astounding 815 million people across the globe are currently categorized as hungry, and an additional 2 billion people are expected to be undernourished by 2050. Recent research has also shown, for example, surprising levels of hunger among U.S. college and university students. How can agriculture, forestry and fisheries provide nutritious food for all, generate decent incomes, and at the same time, protect the health of the environment? What is the potential for digital technology to profoundly change global food and agricultural systems?
