Before returning to school to become a registered nurse, J. Alex Thompson worked in residential life and student services at colleges and universities. Upon graduation, he cared for critically ill adults for several years before heading back to his first love – higher education. Since 2014, he’s been teaching pre-licensure nursing students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. His research focuses on the use of high-fidelity simulation to improve nursing care and outcomes for transgender individuals.

A native of Arkansas, he earned a bachelor's degree from Hendrix College and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. He holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  Prior to his current position at Carthage College, Alex served as Clinical Assistant Professor at Marquette University.
