As many as 811 million people are going hungry across the globe. An estimated 16.9% of households right here in Greene County experience food insecurity and that number continues to rise. But there are no simple solutions. Even before the more visible questions of nutritional education and community partnerships, the path to a healthy meal involves innovative food science and agricultural practices, attention to climate and disease, human resource management, corporate and governmental policy, as well as technology, cybersecurity, transportation, and energy. The Food and Agricultural Organization identifies the four conditions of food security as availability, access, utilization, and stability, so multilevel collaboration will be a key success factor in any endeavor to increase local and global food security. Are there new ways to create collaborations that can contribute to more efficient production and distribution of food? How can communities think across professional, institutional, and even political boundaries to better achieve food security conditions for individuals, children, and families?
