Collaboration is key to solving numerous social and cultural problems, and excellent communication is key to effective collaboration. Excellent communication is developed from awareness of one’s own cultural ideology and understanding of internal biases or fears. How can one begin this journey of self-discovery? Qualitative researchers are beginning to explore the significant role of this “reflexivity” in their encounters with culturally diverse communities. As ethical citizens, with awareness of our own belief systems - through education, experiences, and expectations - we should endeavor to work authentically with other populations. What reflexive strategies can help us be more aware of ourselves and collaborate effectively with others? What role can the arts, language, humanities, education, and other disciplines play in helping to develop these processes of self-discovery, interpretation, analysis, and connection?
