There can be a thin line between harm and choice when balancing independence with responsibility. John Stuart Mill’s harm principle says people should be free to act however they wish, unless their actions cause harm to somebody else. As a society, are freedoms and responsibilities considered individually or collectively? How are our definitions of harm formed? When there is a push for standardized rules, policies, and regulations (natural hair, access to bathrooms, dress codes), who are these norms established for or against – the individual, a specific population or the greater community?  How is balance established with these types of policies with individuality and community in mind?
