Resilience in the Face of Violence
It may seem that violence has become an ever-increasing part of society. From widespread media coverage of active shooter events and mass shootings to the quiet struggle of a family experiencing domestic violence, there are many ways in which people show resiliency to violence. These can include speaking up, fighting back, asking for help, or even mere survival. The effect of violence can be devastating, and it frequently goes beyond those who directly experience it. Time and time again we hear stories of children affected by witnessing violence, or first responders and doctors struggling after a mass casualty event. While the impact of violence can seem insurmountable, we also see hope and resilience in the face of such tragedy. How do personal experiences of violence shape one's outlook on life and society? What are some effective strategies for individuals to build resilience against the mental and physical effects of violence? How is widespread media coverage of violence affecting resilience? What preventive measures can be taken to help reduce the occurrence of violence in society?
