9:00 - 9:50 a.m., Wednesday, September 30, 2026
Live Zoom Webinar

In an era of rising political polarization (Kimball 2020) and widespread student support for open dialogue and diverse perspectives in higher education (Gallup 2016), how can universities and communities better foster the skills and venues for civil discourse?? Civil discourse is the practice of relationally deliberating on matters of public concern with others in a way that seeks to develop knowledge and foster mutual understanding. Research shows that having these skills cultivates empathy as well as moderates extreme views and encourages understanding (Gurin et al. 2013; Jackson 2021). What are the component skills of civil discourse? What are the benefits of identifying common ground and seeking understanding in political conversations and other areas of life? ?How can civil discourse help build stronger, more connected communities to mitigate “Us vs. Them”?
