When values clash: Personal ethics versus social responsibility

2:00 - 3:15 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2015
PSU 313

What happens when an individual’s personal, religious and/or moral principles seem to be in conflict with the rights and values of others, or even with larger concepts of compassion and justice? How may one reconcile these conflicts in the context of a democratic society that values distinct personal and religious freedoms? Does honoring one have to mean ignoring or compromising the other? How may government and community each accept responsibility in helping citizens find a balance? Where do public learning vehicles such as the media, education, faith communities and the arts, fall into the equation?
