Sustaining cultural traditions: How the past can illuminate the future
History is littered with examples of colonial appropriation of land and resources, as well as the dominance and repression of local cultures. Cultural displacement can endanger important native intelligence as languages, medicines and arts practices disappear through generations of disregard and disuse. To what extent have important cultural practices been lost that could enlighten and inform us about how to negotiate a future relationship with our planet? Traditions in Africa, South America and parts of Asia may contain important information that contributes to sustainability.
Are there endangered local practices in our own back yard that might also provide important insights?
