Suffering in silence: Let’s talk before it is too late

All times listed are central time (CT).

Mental health is not a singular issue but is woven throughout many facets of life. From veterans to students to farmers to medical professionals, no demographic is immune from mental illness. The Centers for Disease Control report that, despite national prevention efforts, death by suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, with highest rates in rural areas. Addressing mental health issues, especially suicide, continues to be a critical public health challenge. Institutional and social barriers, as well as perceived stigma, leave many people with little or no support. How can communities better assist veterans to cope with issues of PTSD and transition back into civilian life?  What options exist to address barriers of isolation, bullying, poverty and religion in the search for mental health solutions? What resources are needed to help people of all ages, traditions and cultures bridge the gap to access needed care?
