Science: Unite not alienate

Trust and collaboration between the public and the scientific community are vital for reaping the benefits of modern science and technology, and for maintaining America’s global leadership in these fields (Research America, BIO International Convention). Yet, a disconnect is evident between some citizens and scientists regarding the interpretation of scientific facts and research. This disconnect is evident during the COVID-19 era as a growing number of Americans choose to disregard research-based recommendations from the medical community, such as using face masks and being vaccinated. What factors contribute to the growing mistrust between the public and the scientific community? How does this affect the ability to lead during times of crisis? To what extent does the lack of diversity within STEM fields factor into public distrust? What can scientists and the media do to address the divide? What role might higher education play to bridge the gap?
