School safety is a key factor in student success, but with every shooting, every suicide, and every instance of vicious bullying, it can seem like we’re getting further from the ideal of safe schools.  Are physical controls such as metal detectors, limited access, security cameras, school officers, clear backpacks, and dress codes enough, or can students’ physical safety be improved with attention to the cultures within and surrounding schools? What obstacles stand in the way of fostering social and emotional learning, cultural literacy, and adolescent mental health in our K-12 and higher education environments?  How could local, state, and federal governmental entities communicate and collaborate to cultivate learning environments that are both physically safe and emotionally secure?
