America is known for its emphasis on personal freedom and autonomy. Yet the spirit of community and the power of collective action are deeply embedded in our history, culture and our diverse communities, each with unique values, traditions, and goals.  Mirroring our communities, countless businesses, ranging from local shops to multinational corporations, all contribute to the economic and social fabric of the country.  In recent years, there has been a growing recognition that businesses have a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of these communities, in addition to generating profits.  This has led a delicate dance to unfold between the individual, the businesses, and the collective. What is the role and what does it mean for a business to be a good corporate citizen? How can communities and individuals influence good business behavior? How have modern social and technological developments reshaped the economic landscape for business?  When does collective action serve the common good and when does it infringe upon individual rights?
