Dr. Brenda Smith - 2020 Awardee

Assistant Professor, Child and Family Development-West Plains

Brenda Smith has been described as “a quiet force of leadership and community betterment.” Her multifaceted volunteerism affects change throughout the West Plains area from children and families, to the environment, to workforce development.  She served two terms on the West Plains City Council, and currently serves on the Boards of the Galloway Nature Park, Boys and Girls Club of Greater West Plains and the South Central Child Advocacy Center. For nearly 20 years Brenda has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America as Merit Badge Counselor, Friends of Scouting and member of the BSA Troop 160 Committee.  Quick to step in on needed projects, Brenda is definitely one person that prefers doing, not telling.  So whether you see her serving on the City Tourism Board, organizing volunteers for park clean-up days or out for Haunting in the Hallows, the citizens of West Plains are all collectively gaining from Brenda’s contributions.

Missouri State is proud to recognize Brenda Smith with the 2020 Faculty Excellence in Community Service Award.
